Sean Morgan is a self-made hunt athlete; an up-and-coming next generation bowhunter who has taken the high country mule deer world by storm. Sean grew up in West Point, Utah, but now currently lives in Springville, Utah and works in Lehi, Utah for Low VA Rates. To say Sean is passionate about pursuing giant mule deer in the high country with a bow is an understatement as every free moment he gets is spent learning and studying the habit of these animals.
In the early beginnings of Sean’s hunting career his family primarily hunted with rifles. It wasn’t until his teenage years that a childhood friend introduced him to archery. The state of Utah offered a program that allows youth with a certain permit to hunt all three deer seasons (archery, muzzleloader, and rifle) and his father, Ken Morgan took advantage of this opportunity by taking his son on his first archery hunt. Sean was 16 years old that year when he took his first mule deer buck with a bow.
That first archery harvest was followed by additional success in the following years. When Sean was in his early 20’s he made the decision to start hunting the high country in hopes of an opportunity at a trophy sized mule deer. In the 2011 season he was able to do just that, harvesting his first high country mule deer in the steep mountains just above his home town. This pivotal accomplishment gave Sean the belief that anything was possible and he could achieve more than he ever expected.
Sean’s attraction to archery isn’t solely based on the fact he gets to hunt deer earlier in the year, compared to other weapon seasons. His attraction to bows is based on the fact that archery equipment is continually evolving and improving every year. Sean feels that it takes countless hours of practice each pre-season, even if you aren’t changing your setup, to ensure your equipment is functioning correctly and to build a bond of trust in yourself and your bow. Sean says he is very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Hoyt Archery family and can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
In the past 8-years, Sean has personally taken (3) 170-inch class bucks, (2) 180-inch class bucks, and (3) 200-inch class bucks with his bow, all in the high country on public land and with general season tags. In addition to the bucks Sean’s taken, he also helped his father harvest a 190-inch class buck during Utah’s extended archery season in 2012. Ken has been at his son’s side through every step of Sean’s hunting career and created years of priceless memories. Both Sean and Ken say they owe a lot of their success to the effort and time spent hunting together.
But Sean hasn’t stop with mule deer, wishing to further his success he has taken the next step by chasing late season migrating elk during Utah’s extended archery season. His efforts in this realm of hunting is shown by the 2013 harvest of his very first 5×5 bull elk; followed by his 2014 harvest of a 330-inch class 6×6 bull elk, 2016 harvest of a 315-inch class 6x6 bull elk, and most recently his 2018 harvest of another 315-inch class 6x6 bull elk with his bow.
Sean’s foundation for success is rather simple and isn’t something anybody else can’t do. Sean’s success is a direct result of hard work and dedicated with copious amounts of time spent in the field. This, paired with his motto of “Hunt Smarter, Not Harder” has attributed largely to his success. He always tries to keep a positive attitude and looks at the bright side of any hunting situation. Priding himself on staying humble and remembering where he came from has helped him keep a level mind over all the highs and lows of bowhunting.
During the off-season, Sean can be found wandering the mountains with his dog Willow in search of shed antlers. Sean trained Willow, a female Yellow Lab from a puppy to find deer, elk, and moose antlers. Not only does shed hunting further his year-round knowledge of the animals he hunts, but is great exercise and helps him stay in shape.
Lastly, Sean has had years of support from his local archery shop in Centerville, Utah called Wilde Arrow Archery. Sean shows his appreciation for the business by serving as one of their Pro-Staff and promotes their quality products and service wherever he can. Sean has also written stories on every big animal he’s taken and these articles can be found in the pages of Muley Crazy Magazine and Eastman's Bowhunting Journal.
